Of Counsel*

The Honourable Ronald L. Berger, K.C. served on Alberta’s highest court, the Court of Appeal for 22 years, which followed 11 years on the Court of Queen’s Bench.

He graduated with First Class Honours from McGill University’s Faculty of Law where he received the Chief Justice Greenshields prize in Criminal Law and the Joseph Cohen, K.C. Award for consistent high performance. He was awarded a Fellowship to pursue post-graduate studies in criminal law at the University of Pennsylvania.

While in private practice from 1970 to 1985 he served as sessional lecturer in Criminal Trial Procedure and Advocacy at the Faculty of Law, University of Alberta. He was a Member of the Senate of the University of Alberta and Vice Chairman of the Legal Aid Society of Alberta. He acted as Commission Counsel on the Laycraft Commission of Inquiry into the Affairs of Royal American Shows, and also acted for the Law Society of Alberta in many disciplinary cases. He was named Queen’s Counsel in 1980.

The Hon. Ronald Berger’s primary role with Liberty Law is to mentor our lawyers in criminal trial and appellate matters, including criminal trial procedure, evidence, the framing of issues, and the drafting of submissions to the courts. He will also undertake personal representation on behalf of lawyers, doctors, nurses, and other professionals who face disciplinary proceedings before their regulatory authority. He will also undertake select consultations outside the firm, including arbitration and mediation.
