Stephen Straub became an articling student at Liberty Law upon earning his Juris Doctor from the University of Alberta in 2014. He was called to the Alberta Bar in 2015. Prior to attending law school, he obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology with a minor in Business from Carleton University in Ottawa.
During law school, Stephen focused his studies on criminal law and advocacy, including courses in Advanced Evidence, Advanced Criminal Trial Advocacy and Criminal Procedure. In his final year, he competed in the Coughlin Criminal Trial Moot and won the opportunity to represent the university against six other law schools in a complex mock jury trial.
In addition to his studies, Stephen was heavily involved with the Criminal Law Project of Student Legal Services of Edmonton. Beginning as a volunteer, he was soon hired as a summer case worker after his first year. In his second year, he was elected as one of two Criminal Law Coordinators responsible for overseeing the project, and sat on Student Legal Services’ Management Committee. Throughout his time with the clinic, Stephen handled numerous criminal and regulatory files, and successfully defended individuals at trial charged with offences including refusal to provide a breath sample, possession of stolen property and fraud.
Stephen maintains a keen interest in criminal law and its intersection with the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. He is a member of the Criminal Trial Lawyers’ Association, and his practice is focused entirely on defending those charged with criminal and regulatory offences. He has successfully defended people accused of a broad range of offences at both the provincial and superior court levels. In addition to his own practice, Stephen often works with the partners at the firm on complex and serious cases, including homicides.
Being arrested and charged with an offence can be an extremely stressful and confusing process. Stephen takes pride in helping his clients navigate the criminal justice system and in providing them with honest and straightforward advice.
