Adult daughter drove her car into her mother pinning her between the vehicle and a wall, causing life threatening injuries. The mother succumbed to her injuries a few months after the incident. Psychiatrists at Alberta Hospital felt that the accused was not mentally ill to the point of being not criminally responsible. Defence retained a forensic psychiatrist and the matter proceeded to trial on the issue of whether the accused was not criminally responsible by reason of mental disorder. Client was found not criminally responsible by reason of mental disorder and was allowed to remain in the community. Client was allowed to continue living at home with very successful community-based treatment.
